AHPCC Expanding Facilities |
|
AHPCC is expanding again. The center is located in the old Galles Building, a Cadillac dealership built in the fifties. Until 1999, the center filled the show room with staff, students, and computer workstations. AHPCC expanded into a service bay beginning in late 1998 to provide office space, a new workshop area for training, a seminar room, and a temporary computing systems machine room. It was oversubscribed at occupancy in April 1999. The center has grown in the last 18 months from a small "resource Center" to a nationally recognized supercomputer center. In the period the AHPCC installed two state-of-the art computing systems, Roadrunner, and now LosLobos. These systems place AHPCC in the top 5 among US education institutions in the US. In addition, the center has added over 30 staff and students. The old showroom and the service bays were never meant to house supercomputers, only Cadillacs and the center is out of space again and in need of a real computer systems machine room. So, we're building again, this time into the next service bay.
"We are anxious to begin the build-out", Facility Manager Amy Button wrote in a memo to Facility Planning. "As you know, we are in great need of a modern computer room. UNM is receiving international recognition for its supercomputing capabilities and considered a national resource now in the top 5 among educational Institutions." The expansion will add over 5,000 square feet to the center.
The new computer room will house all the computing systems at the AHPCC: Los Lobos, Roadrunner, Vista Azul, Blackbear, and Nambe, the SGI Origin 2000. In addition, facility will have room for expansion and laboratory space. The HPC Systems Group will occupy offices next to the computing systems room. The new computing systems room is only part of the expansion. The AHPCC is collaborating with the College of Fine Art's Art technology Center to create a studio/laboratory "space" to explore collaborative projects in music, dance, art, and theater. The space will be unique and exciting.
AHPCC management expects completion of the expansion by January 1, 2001.
