Flatland Runs Over the Access Grid

On Friday August 4th, the AHPCC successfully multicast "Flatland" over the Alliance grid network. The project team included Dr. Bob Balance, Moad Mowafi, Sai Mudigonda, Narendra Dandu, John Greenfield, Dr. Tom Caudell, and Ken Summers. The project was aimed at being able to adapt Flatland, a program designed to display scientific results in a three dimensional environment, to the Access Grid network so that anyone on the grid could access the program. This was achieved by rewriting the video interface control software specifically for the Access Grid. This rework displays true graphics rather than a compressed video feed.

The possible implications of this breakthrough are very important in the area of research collaboration. This will allow researchers to collaborate over the Alliance grid with three-dimensional displays of data sets from experiments. It allows the remote site to fully view the virtual environment from every angle. Currently, remote sites will not be able to have the complete interactive capabilities of the Flatland program.

Researchers will continue adapting Flatland's audio and remote control capabilities. They hope to continue improving the opportunities for collaboration between research groups. Remote researchers from any size organization will be able to use the same facilities as large institutions.
