About Projects, Accounts, and Logins
Projects
HPC@UNM structures your usage of
our resources according to Projects. A Project is the primary unit for tracking
users and usage. A single Project may include many users and can use many different
resources. On the other hand, a single user may be active in several different
Projects.
Basically, a Project indicates a
specific research or administration activity that spans time and consumes computational
cycles or other resources. Every Project has a point-of-contact, called the
Principal Investigator. The Principal Investigator is responsible for the activities
carried out under the project.
Accounts
An Account corresponds to a single
user (like you), using a single resource (like Los Lobos), under the care of
a single Project. Accounts are specific to Projects, to people, to machines,
and to your login information.
- You can't have an Account without
a Project.
- Accounts are specific to login
name and groups. You can't have an Account without login information.
- Accounts are specific to machines.
So you have a login on LosLobos, and the same login on RoadRunner, you have
two Accounts, but only one login. The two Accounts can specify the same project,
or different Projects. It all depends on what you are doing.
- You can have two Accounts on the
same machine (with the same login) if the Projects differ or the groups differ.
- All usage is billed to Accounts,
and from there to Projects.
- Users can view their usage, grouped
by Account. Principal investigators can also view their Project's usage.
When you apply for an Account, the
system will inquire about the Project and PI.
Logins
Underneath it all, you still need
a login name and a password.
