matthew-fricke-caption.pngThe Center for Advanced Research Computing (CARC) is gearing up to offer workshops during the Fall 2023 semester, presented by University of New Mexico Research Assistant Professor Matthew Fricke. The workshops are tailored to cater to both beginners and intermediate users of high-performance computing (HPC) resources. In these workshops, participants will learn about Linux and HPC, computer-related topics that are used for advanced research.

For the Fall 2023 semester, the workshops will be offered both in-person and on Zoom. "We've test-run this approach during the summer with remarkable success," shares Fricke. "We're thrilled to bring this flexible format to the fall semester, ensuring that every aspiring researcher has the opportunity to harness the power of HPC."

The workshops take a customized approach, as each class is provided with a thoughtfully tailored curriculum, catered to their unique research interests. From Gaussian for chemistry enthusiasts to magnetar visualization for astronomers to COVID simulations for immunology scholars, Fricke brings the intersection of research and computation to life in a captivating and engaging manner.

Attendees are also guided through the intricacies of running programs on the computer clusters, making use of the SLURM system, a free and open-source job scheduler for Linux.

In the intermediate workshop, participants dive deeper into HPC. They learn how to use more advanced tools and run programs that use many computer processors to solve big problems faster.

CARC has partnered with University Libraries, integrating HPC workshops with coding and data-science workshops on a common scheduling system. This collaboration enables CARC users to easily access R, Python, and other courses offered by library staff, while students browsing the library’s events listing can discover CARC’s HPC workshops.
